Spanish Civil War Is another excuse for Hitler and Mussolini to “test” the democracies Spain is a monarchy until 1931 when a republic is made In July 1936, General Francisco Franco leads a revolt because he wants a Fascist government and starts a Civil War that lasts three years Germany and Italy sent troops, tanks, and planes to help the Nationalists (Franco’s forces)

The Republicans receive almost no help from abroad Western Democracies remain neutral The Soviet Union does help the Republicans by sending equipment 1939- the Republic collapses and Franco becomes Spain’s Fascist Dictator
