Replaced native labor (encomienda system) and indentured servants throughout the Americas Exclusive use of Africans as slaves developed into a political, social, and economic system that gives rise to racism

Mercantilism = idea that a country gains power by building its supply of bullion (gold/silver) with more exports than imports Exports: Items trade from a home country to a foreign country Imports: Items traded from a foreign country to a home country Colonies create raw materials for the mother country (home country) and served as markets for manufactured goods

Mercantilism leads to a commercial revolution
Commercial revolution where money is made by investing in trade creating a “middling class” of merchants and artisans “Seeds of Capitalism” Build up money (capital) for investment Create markets to sell goods Get government out of the way (Free Enterprise)
