6.2 Notes: Solving Systems of Equations by Elimination
For this method, if one of the variables has opposite coefficients (ex. +4x and 4x), you can eliminate that variable by adding the two equations in the system together, combining the remaining like terms. Remember, you must solve for both variables and write your final answer/solution as a coordinate point (x,y) “Level 1” – Add the two equations together, thereby eliminating the variable with opposite coefficients. “Level 2” – First, multiply one of the equations by 1, thereby flipping all of the signs in that equation. Then, add the equations together. “Level 3” – First, multiply one of the equations by the value that would produce the opposite coefficients needed. Then, add the equations together.

6.2 Classwork SHOW ALL WORK (Neat and Organized!) NO WORK = NO CREDIT Be sure to write final answer/solution as a coordinate point (x,y) “Level 1” – Add the two equations together, thereby eliminating the variable with opposite coefficients. “Level 2” – First, multiply one of the equations by 1, thereby flipping all of the signs in that equation. Then, add the equations together. “Level 3” – First, multiply one of the equations by the value that would produce the opposite coefficients needed. Then, add the equations together.
