1 Leadership 1 By the end of this lesson you should be able to identify and compare qualities we associate with leadership. To do this you will: To consider the qualities necessary for good leadership To identify them in people we see in the media Compare them with the needs of the Jewish people at the time of Jesus

Which of them are good leaders? Which of them are ‘bad’ leaders? What qualities can you identify that make you think that?

5 Task 1: Create a leader Use your discussions to create a job advert for a ‘leader’ You decide what they will be the leader of Write a description of the kind of person who should apply for the job.

Who fits the bill? Assessment for Learning AFL Feed back your leader descriptions to the class Can you think of anyone who may fit the bill? They could be famous or just someone you know.

The Jewish people were looking/ waiting for a leader Think pair share about their history: a) What can you remember about the trials of the Jewish people? b) Why were they in such need of a leader? c) What sort of person were they looking for? a judge a just and powerful ruler Jewish Ideas about the Messiah bringer of peace anointed by God a royal person he will restore the Kingdom of Israel Task: Using these characteristics and any evidence from the bible work you have done, explain why the Jews did not think Jesus was the Messiah. L4 – Show what the Jews expected and say Jesus was not these qualities L5 – Explain the differences between the expectations and Jesus’ character L6 – Compare using biblical evidence for Jewish views and New Testament evidence for Jesus 12

HW – Prepare a 2 minute speech/presentation that identifies Jesus as a leader/Messiah You will need to include: What the Jews expected from their Messiah Why they didn’t think that this was Jesus Why we as Christians think that he was! This will form the assessment for this topic! It will be delivered two weeks from now.

Read the following passages: Mark 10: The Best Seats Mark 9:33-37 – Who’s the greatest? Matthew 16:21-26 – Peter doesn’t understand Acts 1:6 – After the Resurrection For each passage, answer these questions: What is the misunderstanding? How does Jesus help them to understand? What is Jesus’ message about himself?

25 Bring it all together Self Assessment SA Compare and contrast ideas that people have about Jesus being the Messiah Level 4 – State what qualities people expected the Messiah to have Level 5 – Explain, using some evidence how Jesus could be seen as the Messiah Level 6 – Compare the Jewish and Christian understanding of the Messiah stating how Jesus doesn’t obviously meet the Jewish expectations Level 7 – Evaluate how even though Jesus’ Messiahship was not easily identified by the Jews, he does meet the criteria in different ways.
