3. Unit Two: Fahrenheit 451 Lesson 1
Analyzing vocabulary and word choice to determine the author’s point of view

4. Slide One: Introduction
This nine weeks, we will read Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury.
It is about a man named Montag who lives in a society that has banned books.
As we read this text and other informational texts, we will consider the value of books and language and the impact these things have on us as individuals and as a society.

5. Slide Two: Objectives/Assessments
You will read various literary and informational texts to understand the power of language and books as they are used to educate and influence others.
You will express your understanding by analyzing how Bradbury develops a theme in Fahrenheit 451 and by researching issues related to the novel.

6. Slide Three: Objectives/Assessments
At the end of this unit, you will be asked to write a literary analysis essay about how the author of Fahrenheit 451 uses craft, literary elements, and literary devices to develop the themes of the text.
You will also engage in research on a topic related to the novel, write a research essay, and present a persuasive speech.
To do this, we will build our understanding about the value of books and ideas by examining how Montag, the main character in Fahrenheit 451, evolves and how the author of Fahrenheit 451, develops themes in the text.

He grew up living on an reservation, which is land in the United States that is controlled by specific American Indian tribes.

Let’s review the definitions of the three rhetorical appeals.

Ethos – using one’s authority or credibility to convince someone of an argument.

Pathos – creating an emotional response to convince someone of an argument.
“They are the enemy. They've destroyed everything we've worked so hard to build, and they don't care who gets hurt in the process."
Logos –using facts and figures or reasoning to persuade
"History has shown time and again that absolute power corrupts absolutely."
