1 Share the Journey: One archbishop, 125 committed people, 500 miles
Charity no and a company limited by guarantee no Charity no and a company limited by guarantee no May 2018 Share the Journey: One archbishop, 125 committed people, 500 miles  Braving the pouring rain, 125 people joined a Share the Journey walk through Birmingham city centre on Saturday 28 April. They persevered through the elements and walked over 500 miles to Share the Journey in solidarity with refugees and migrants. Jane Lavery, the organiser, said; “Both the Old and the New Testaments in the Bible ask us to welcome the stranger, and during the walk we listened to the stories of refugees who joined us on the walk. Pope Francis has a particular concern for refugees, and that is why I am so grateful to Archbishop Bernard for joining us on the walk, which we all undertook to help highlight the struggles and difficulties refugees face across the world’. CAFOD supporters have already walked 6,000 miles in solidarity with refugees. But we still have some distance to go, so add your miles to our 24,900 total today. Organise a walk in your community before September: cafod.org.uk/sharethejourney Turn climate ‘words into actions’ Have you got… » 2 minutes? Go online and look at our totaliser. See how many miles we’ve already walked and discover where our next stop is. » 6 minutes? us at or call us on to let us know when and where you are organising your Share the Journey walk. » An hour or two? Just enough time to plan your Share the Journey walk. Where to start? Look for resources on our website and decide on a date. Why not consider Refugee Week, June? Former Archbishop of Canterbury, Lord Williams, and more than 170 faith leaders from across the Commonwealth have issued a call to governments to turn "words into action" on climate change in April. Daniel Hale, Head of Campaigns at CAFOD, said: “Pope Francis’ message to care for our common home and rethink the way the world develops is being heard across the world. It is very encouraging to see so many faith leaders coming together to speak up for action on climate change. At CAFOD we will continue to keep up our efforts to guarantee a brighter future for poor people living on the front line of climate change. » speak up on climate change in July: cafod.org.uk/speakup » Download all resources: cafod.org.uk/sharethejourney CAFOD Campaigns Update – May 2018 You are signed up to receive this update as a CAFOD Campaigns Volunteer. 2 Addressing safe migration from Bangladesh
Coming soon Time to celebrate! What: Refugee week - a chance to celebrate and promote understanding of why people seek sanctuary When: 16 – 24 June Where: In your local community How: Organise a Share the Journey walk to show your solidarity with refugees. It can be with your parish, your school or your local community. Look on our website for all the resources you need. It is easy and simple to organise. Each year in Bangladesh around 800,000 people migrate to find work overseas. About half of people travel legally while the other half migrate through unofficial channels. Even though Bangladeshi laws and policies encourage safe migration, migrants often face violence and intimidation, not being paid a minimum wage and human trafficking. Women and girls in particular are at risk. CAFOD works in partnership with a community-based organisation in Bangladesh called OKUP to support women and girl migrant workers. OKUP’s work ensures that migrants are fully informed of the risks that they face before they leave, supports them overseas and helps them seek shelter and justice when they return home if it is needed. The situation in Bangladesh reflects a wider global migration and refugee crisis. The Share the Journey campaign is an opportunity for you to show your support for all people forced to move. Join our campaign today. » Read more about our campaign: cafod.org.uk/sharethejourney Quote of the month Meet Gillie Drinkall ... Gillie Drinkall lobbies her MP with CAFOD as an MP correspondent (MPC). Read her story. Pope Francis’ new letter Gaudete et Exsultate (Rejoice and be glad) tells us that: I first joined CAFOD as an Education Volunteer. After seven hugely enjoyable years, I decided, in addition to the schools volunteering, to spend one day a week helping the Campaigns Team at Romero House. It was here that, slightly inadvertently, I became an MPC. I was asked to draft a letter about the World Humanitarian Summit for MPCs to send to their MPs. “...the only proper attitude is to stand in the shoes of those brothers and sisters of ours who risk their lives to offer a future to their children …”. Stand in the shoes of migrants and refugees today and take part in Pope Francis’ Share the Journey campaign. Having written the letter, I decided that I should actually send it to my MP and call myself an MPC too! Two years on, I am still the one drafting the letters that we send to all MPCs. It is not a very heavy task as we only ask them to write three or four letters a year to their MP. With these letters we help raise awareness and understanding of the causes of poverty and injustice with our local MP. We encourage them to support policies and activities that help our brothers and sisters around the world. » Act Now Connect the poor to the powerful and become an MPC today.
