Good afternoon! In order to begin class today, you must successfully complete the given task as a group. You will be given a specific set of rules which will you will need in order to be successful. Please begin by standing outside of the circle
2
Keypunch Rules Only one person in the circle at a time.
Both feet on a number constitutes a key press. The keys may not be moved and must be pressed in numerical order. If above rules are not met, the challenge will restart. Your team is trying for the fastest time.
3
What did you notice? Was your group successful?
How did you help? What was your role? Could we make this process more efficient? Write step by step directions for a future group What do they need to do first, second, third…?
4
Algorithms
5
Algorithms A set of step by step directions for accomplishing a specific task. (In CS which could be performed by a computer) Usually associated with math ~ formulas (recipe) We just completed an algorithm together as a class What common algorithms can you think of: Think daily everyday tasks.
6
Algorithms are judged:
Correct Efficient (but why?) Let’s make a correct, but inefficient set of directions: How to eat a sandwich. If it is incorrect, we don’t need to worry about efficiency. Video: What is an algorithm?
7
Question: What is the correct name for a musical beat that, with mathematical certainty, will provide a step by step formula For predicting climate change?
8
Answer: An Al-Gore-Rhythm
9
Partner Draw Activity Begin by choosing one image you are able to draw. Draw it. You will give directions to your partner to recreate your image. All directions must be verbal only. No guiding or correcting your partner’s image creation. You must give directions only [not – “Draw a house”]
10
Partner Draw Activity Let’s see what you both came up with! What difficulties did you face? If you could go back and redo this, how could we make this easier?
11
Grid drawing Create an image using the 4 x 4 grid.
Now, how could we communicate directions to our partners? What are some difficulties we could face? What is easier about this task? Exit ticket – How could this algorithm relate to a computer program?
