In the early 1820s, Spain tried to encourage people to move to Texas by giving them huge tracts of land.

Spain gave Moses Austin permission to start a colony in Texas
But, Settlers had to agree to follow Spanish laws Moses Austin

Stephen Austin, his son, encouraged 297 families to Texas between 1821 and 1827
Known as the “old three hundred”

Why were American settlers interested in this land?

Soon, Mexico gained its independence from Spain in 1821

Issues of conflict: Catholic Protestant Mexico had abolished slavery
New settlers: Protestant Many were slave holders who wanted to grow cotton Spanish/Mexicans: Catholic Mexico had abolished slavery Started to impose heavy taxes on American imports

When war breaks out in Texas in 1836 - SAM HOUSTON is placed in charge of the Texas army

Mexican soldiers trapped the Texans in an old mission called the Alamo.

After 12 days of fighting, the Mexican soldiers had 1,800 men charge the Alamo
The Texans then ran out of ammunition!

When the Mexican soldiers took the Alamo, all but 5 Texans had fought to the death.
A total of 183 Texas defenders were killed in the battle .

The battles of the Alamo and Goliad made the Texans upset and many signed up to fight Mexico!

At the next battle, the tide changes for the Texans! They won the BATTLE OF SAN JACINTO and Santa Anna signed a treaty giving Texas their freedom!!

What is the problem with bringing Texas into the United States?
It will off-set the balance of slave & free states. Slave states would have more say in Congress.

Some Northerners were worried that if Texas became a state it would shift the balance of power to slave states
