1 Adding and Subtracting Integers
NS.1 1. Apply and extend previous understandings of addition and subtraction to add and subtract rational numbers; represent addition and subtraction on a horizontal or vertical number line diagram.

2 Definition: An integer is a whole positive number, negative number, or zero Examples: -87, 11, 0, -62

3 Definition: An integer is a whole positive number, negative number, or zero Examples: -87, 11, 0, -62 Non-Examples: ½ , -¾, .27, .38, 

4 Same Signs (Addition) 4+7=11 -5+(-4)=-9 Keep the sign! Add integers

5 Different Signs (Addition)
4+(-7)=-3 -4+5=1 Keep the sign of the integer with a greater absolute value Subtract integers

6 Either (Subtraction) 4-(+7)=4+(-7)=-3 -5-(-4)=-5+4=-1
Keep the sign of the integer with a greater absolute value Two consecutive negative signs become positive Then add or subtract

7 TOD 5 + (-7) -8 + (-2) -8-(-6) 8-(+7) No trash on the floor
