1 stability Principle 1

2 Learning goals We are learning about the principle of stability.
We are learning the role mass, centre of mass, base of support and position of centre of mass play in stability.

3 stability balance terms
the quality, state or degree of being stable and capable of resisting a change in motion an even distribution of mass enabling someone or something to remain steady

4 The more stability increases!
Principle 1 The greater the mass; The lower the centre of gravity; The larger the base of support; The closer the centre of mass is positioned to the base of support; The more stability increases!

5 terms

6 mass

7 Nice mass… the more massive or heavy an individual, the greater is their resistance to going: from a state of rest to a state of motion; or, from a state of motion to a state of rest the greater the mass, the greater the resistance to motion

8 Centre of gravity

9 Centre of gravity (mass)
imaginary point at which all masses are concentrated and the body balances in all directions controlling centre of gravity provides an athlete with stability or balance while stationary or moving is 57% of body height for males and 55 % for females.

10 centre of gravity changes as athletes move arms and legs
shifts in direction of motion

11

12 athletes increase their stability when they lower their centre of gravity

13

14 Base of support

15 Base of support the area inside the points in contact with the ground
athletes increase their stability when they increase the SIZE of their base of support

16 stability increased when line of gravity falls within perimeter of base of support
the line of gravity is farther from the outside edge of the base of support

17

18 Position of centre of mass
to cause movement an athlete must manipulate their position in relation to the centre of gravity when line of gravity falls outside base, balance is destroyed and movement occurs

19 in order to complete these skills these athletes changes their line of gravity several times
every movement of the line of gravity results in movement by the athlete

20 Learning goals We are learning about the principle of stability.
We are learning the role mass, centre of mass, base of support and position of centre of mass play in stability.
