2 Internal and External Internal conflict occurs within the character. There is only one type of internal conflict, Man vs. Self External conflicts occur between a character and forces outside of the character. There are 4 types of external conflict: Man vs. Man Man vs. Nature Man vs. Society Man vs. Fate

3 Man vs. Self Man vs. Self is an internal conflict, and it occurs within a character and often involves making a difficult choice between right and wrong or mixed emotions/feelings.

4 Man vs. Man Man vs man is external conflict that occurs between two different characters.

5 Man vs. Nature Man vs Nature is external conflict that occurs when a character is struggling with natural forces or other elements of nature.

6 Man vs. Society Man vs. society is an external conflict that occurs when a character is engaged in struggle with a larger group of people.

7 Man vs. Fate Man vs. fate conflict is an external conflict that occurs when a character is struggling with what God and/or life has planned for the character.

8 Analyzing Conflict When analyzing conflict identify the following:
What type of conflict is involved? How is it a conflict? Identify who and/or what are the opposing forces involved and describe what started the conflict. Why is the conflict important to the story being told?

9 Analysis Example What: This cartoon is an example of man vs. self conflict. How: In this cartoon, Calvin is having internal conflict between what he wants and what he does not want. Calvin wants to make a good grade on his research, but he does not want to do the hard work to earn his grade. Why: The conflict Calvin faces is important because it helps setup his humorous solution to the conflict, a pretty package is better than hard work.
