5. Plot We are now working on plot. Fill in the blanks on your worksheet.
Plot: The main events of a play, novel, movie, or similar work, devised and presented by the writer as an interrelated sequence.

6. The Plot Graph
Many stories have a similar plot outline and contain the same sequence of events. One model of this is the linear plot graph.

7. Exposition:
Part of the story that introduces important information you need to know in order to understand the story:
setting
characters
protagonist
antagonist
background of characters
previous events

8. Initial Conflict
This is where the protagonist encounters their first problem or obstacle
also known as the inciting incident or trigger incident
further problems have a snowball effect and lead to the climax of the plot

9. Rising Action
A series of conflicts that build toward the climax, or point of greatest interest
think of this as the uphill battle(s) the protagonist must face
usually creates suspense or excitement for the reader

10. Climax This is the turning point in the story
highest point of intensity or drama
this is the epic battle scene or tragic death etc.
the point of no return, so the plot must start to work towards a resolution after this

11. Falling Action
Starts to resolve the problem(s) that the protagonist encounters
Occurs after the climax
Can happen quite quickly at the end of the story
Starts to tie up loose ends

12. Resolution
The final closing and clarification of the dramatic or narrative plot
Ties up all loose ends
has a clear solution to the climax
should leave the reader feeling satisfied with the events of the story

15. Let’s Examine Plot
Exposition: 3 characters - sleeping man, the trainee and the examiner
space ship, middle of nowhere country property,
both inside and outside the house as well as the interview of the UFO
Trigger Incident: UFO arrives and unsuccessfully attempts to extract the sleeping man
Rising Action: the trainee makes several more attempts to extract the sleeping man
Climax: the trainee almost succeeds at extracting the sleeping man but gets over-confident and the sleeping man nearly falls to his death
Falling Action: The examiner takes the controls and sets everything right
The trainee is depressed as he has failed
Resolution: The examiner feels badly for the trainee and lets him drive, resulting in a humourous crash, destroying the country house. But, the sleeping man remains asleep and the UFO flys away
