The PE Teacher Heart of the matter

Not an easy job

Right Field http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lMovZ_qCRJ0 Discussion Qs
What issues are brought out by this song? Do you personally identify with this song in any way? What changes could we make to a softball lesson where one S is always in right field? How can we make “right fielders” enjoy PA for a lifetime? How often does this scenario play out in real life?
4
Q&A What is meant by inclusive practices?
How can you make your classroom a positive place for learning and connections with physical activity (Right fielders, p.5)
5
Developmentally Appropriate Practices (Activities) DAP/DAA
Address the developmental levels among learners in a class or age group of students or participants. Provide activities that guarantee successful experiences for all students or participants and provide individual challenges for the athletically gifted, the below average, as well as the average learner. Differentiation part of lesson plan template Ensure success and provide challenges Utilize developmentally appropriated equipment
6
A Place for Everyone Activity experiences should be appropriate for the developmental level of all students. Differentiated instruction – adjusting task or language for low and high performers including students with disabilities The “less physically educated” are more of our focus. Why? This can be challenging for us
7
A Place for Everyone Age appropriate
Equipment sized and weighted for success One ball for every child
8
Should all or most students watch others performing “on stage?”
9
Should 24 students wait to share one pencil?
10
Learning Time Codes (ALTPE)
An observation technique that determines the percentage of time a student in PE spends in each of the following categories/codes. 6 categories (WAM TKO – acronym) Wait time Activity time Management time Transition time Knowledge time Off-task time
11
Learning time codes Example assignment
Know each of the codes and what they stand for
12
Learning time codes Eliminate elimination Use small sided games
To promote better percentages: Eliminate elimination Use small sided games Wait time is your enemy (standing around) When students are provided with simply “time on task” it may actually be a counter- productive period of time and/or activity.
13
OTL Opportunities to Learn
Defined as each time a student performs a skill or interacts with a concept that you are trying to teach. Examples: bump a volleyball, position themselves in zone, hit a golf ball Why is this more accurate than simply measuring activity time? Consider 3 v 3 soccer as opposed to 11 v 11 soccer Hierarchy of importance OTLs Activity time (ALT-PE) Time on task
14
Appropriate Practices
These documents “represent expert consensus about important appropriate and inappropriate practices observed frequently in elementary school” Elementary School Middle School High School
15
Feedback Important to provide feedback to students regarding what they are doing well and/or may need to improve. This is one of the most challenging things you will learn! Types of feedback: general (+-), specific (+-)and corrective As a student teacher, you will analyze feedback and will be responsible for it in each PE pedagogy class Example - What might you say to this student?
17
Teaching Styles Teacher Centered – teacher runs the show, students duplicate or mimic the teacher’s understandings 1. Command 2. Practice (includes task, stations) 3. Reciprocal 4. Self-Check 5. Self-Selection
18
Teaching Styles Student Centered – students have more control and choice in class. Students “create” their understandings. 6. Guided Discovery (includes convergent) 7. Problem Solving (divergent, exploration) 8. Individual Program/Exploration Summary Document
19
Success Rate Teacher should adjust activities so that task is not too easy (boredom) or too hard (frustration) Challenge progresses or builds from previous learning
20
Positive Environment/Personal & Social Responsibility
SHAPE standard 4 Again, the environment in class ties into our ability to promote lifetime physical activity. It should be a positive place regardless of ability or other factors Tools: Hellison’s Model (not on exam) Level of involvement scale (not on exam)

Job title? You are a physical education teacher, a physical educator, a PE teacher or a phys ed teacher. You are not a “gym teacher” b/c you don’t teach the walls and the word “gym teacher” is often associated with old, outdated inappropriate practices.
27
Practice Inappropriate activities made appropriate by you!
