Types of Public Speaking
Unplanned Planned Unplanned – means spur of the moment Planned What do you need? You must have some knowledge of the topic you are asked to speak about prior to the event, be comfortable with impromptu speeches, and know your time limits. Be prepared and rehearse!

Know Your Audience Age Gender Number of people Audience Knowledge
Age – Know your outside references (i.e TV shows, music, etc), How your talking to them in general, loudness of voice, clarity, etc. Gender Ratio – ^^^ same Number of People your speaking to – Less people = more personal, call on audience for interaction, etc. Larger group = more general speaking, talking to masses Audience Knowledge – Do your audiences already have a grasp on the subject or are they hearing this for the first time? How much detail should you use?

Winning Your Audience How to win the audience? Keep your discussion:
Interesting To the point Interesting – use examples, provide interesting facts, involve the audience with questions, jokes when appropriate Concise – To the point. Don’t ramble. Keep comments simple, but relevant and informative

Overcoming Speech Anxiety
How to win the audience? Acknowledge Your Fear Act Confident Channel Nervous Energy If you are nervous, first acknowledge the fear. Be confident when presenting your speech. If you look and act confident, you will feel confident. Act natural Do not twirl your hair or move nervously when presenting. Channel your energy into your speech and put more emotion into it.

Before: Prepare Know your topic Develop your presentation material
Practice, Practice, Practice Know Your Topic - do your homework, good public speakers sound best when they are confident in their topic Presentation Material – make sure to develop materials ahead of time. Make sure they are accurate (spelling and content) Practice – record yourself (phone mic, webcam, etc) this helps weed out minor issues that often happen “in the moment”

Before: Prepare Be in the presentation room beforehand with materials prepared Welcome guests coming in Always be present setting up materials and any power points before the audience comes to hear your presentation. You should be prepared before they walk in the door so be sure to go to the room early. Once you are done setting up, welcome in the guests at the door.

The Speech Keep It Slow Get the audience engaged Movement Annunciation
Slow – slow speech, slow breathing, pause between sentences. Often people speed up subconsciously, remember to keep it slow! Get the Audience Engaged – (optional) Tell a joke, quote, poem, story. This can often loosen up an audience. Movement – Hand motions (as needed), walk back and forth (as needed) Annunciation – This is important to avoid your words running together.

The Speech Nonverbal Communication Body Language Eye Contact
Body Language- Throughout your speech use hand gestures to help your speech. However do not become overdramatic. DO NOT have your hands in your pockets or your hands twiddling your hair. Have your hands by your side. Eye Contact- Keep eye contact with your audience and look across the room. Do not look a one specific side or area. Try to engage the entire room.

Things to Avoid Reading directly from notes
Turning back on audience to read power point Hands in pockets No um, ah, you know’s Talking too fast or quiet These are general things to avoid while speaking publicly.

Closing the Speech Highlights Accomplished Closing Thank You
Highlights – the central theme, main points, etc. Accomplished - Provide the audience with a feeling of satisfaction that you accomplished what you promised Closing – Say a single conclusion statement Thank You - thank the audience for their attention
