1 + 3 1 4 8 2 9 6 = 10 7 5 - Magic Math (Inverse Operations)
10 7 5 - GLE     Understand that addition and subtraction are inverse operations.

2 5 3 + 2 = 2 + 3 = 5 Let’s start with something easy!
Now, let’s learn something new. 2 + 3 = 5 In an addition number sentence, you can switch the addends around and the sum will always be the same.

3 Try this: 9 2 + 7 = Now let’s switch it! 7 + 2 = 9

4 Now, try these on your own:
6 + 2 = 2 + 6 = 2 + 4 = 4 + 2 = 9 + 2 = 2 + 9 = Remember! When you are adding 2 to an even number the answer will be even. If you are adding 2 to an odd number, the answer will be odd.

5 Tricky Tip! We only switch the addends around when we are adding.
It doesn’t work with subtraction.

6 If the answer isn’t the same, check your Math!
Quick Review When adding, you can switch the addends around and get the same answer. 4 + 3 = = 7 If the answer isn’t the same, check your Math! You cannot switch when subtracting! 0 – 6 = 6 6 – 0 = 6

7 Now, get to work!!
