Equipment Familiarization
Visual Imaging Simulator for Transport Aircraft Systems (VISTAS) Simulator with an advanced PFD
Training
Three practice trials (one partial tasks and two whole-task)
PFD feature configurations include SVS, EVS and/or Tunnel
Instructions on flight scenario (ILS approach to a desert landing site)
Completion of Ranking Forms
Complete “Subjective Clutter Descriptor Ranking Form”.

6. Briefing Training Test Trials Debriefing
Flying the aircraft simulator
- Follow narrative of flight scenario for landing airplane at airport, including status, clearance from ATC, and required actions
- View sequence of 16 different configurations of head-up display (HUD) components
- Provide feedback on list of semantic pairs and overall display “clutter” for each display image by using rating questionnaires (paper and pencil).
ILS approach to a desert landing site.
Each trial consists of two sequential phases
(descending and hovering).
At the end of each phase, you will complete the “Subjective Clutter Rating Form”.
There will be 16 trials with different orders of presentation of display configurations.

7. Briefing Training Test Trials Debriefing
Completion of Post-experiment Ranking Forms
Complete “Subjective Clutter Descriptor Ranking Form”.
Debriefing
- Answer open questions on the definition of display clutter.
- Provide subjective comments on the experiment.
