SYMMETRICAL BALANCE Achieved when one side of a room is the exact reverse, or mirror image of the other half Creates a quiet, restful feeling Suggests restraint, orderliness, formality Tends to focus on the center of a room Also called, FORMAL balance.

Asymmetrical Balance Creates more interesting arrangements
Achieved when visual weights are equal, but elements are different in size, form, color, pattern and spacing. Creates more interesting arrangements Suggests movement and informality Has a more lasting appeal Also referred to as INFORMAL balance.
