Politics is a process by which groups of people make decisions.
The word "Politics" comes from the Greek word "polis” meaning city-state.

4. Politics Politics has a great effect on our lifestyle.
The decisions made and passed allow governments to control the things we can and can not do as well as at what age we can do specific acts.

5. Levels of government In Canada we have 3 levels of government:
Municipal
Provincial
Federal

6. Municipal
A municipal government is generally run by a council whose leader is known as a mayor.
They deal with items such as:
Local policing and fire stations
Public utilities and services
Planning and development
Collecting municipality taxes

7. Provincial
A provincial government consists of MHA’s and is led by a Premier.
They deal with items such as:
Public schooling
Health and social services
Highways
Justice

8. Federal
A federal government consists of members of parliament and is headed by the prime minister.
They deal with items such as:
Foreign affairs
Environment
National defence
Transportation

9. Types of Government
3 types of governments can exist at the provincial and federal levels:
Majority (50% +1)
Minority (less then 50%)
Coalition (less then 50% where two party’s may work together)
These governments work to pass legislation which will govern the people

10. Democracy
Democracy is a system of government in which either the actual governing is carried out by the people governed (direct democracy), or the power to do so is granted by them (as in representative democracy).
