About the impact of British and French actions on the United States

3 Where is the Northwest Territory?
The large territory north and west of the Ohio River to the Mississippi River British promised to withdraw from area, but never did British supplied Native Americans with guns Why did Great Britain arm the Native Americans in this territory?

4 Native Americans didn’t want to leave their lands…
Refused to sell land to the United States north of the Ohio River Americans continued to settle there What conflict do you anticipate?

5 A Series of Battles Washington sent a small force to stop Native American attacks on settlers Little Turtle and Blue Jacket defeated the soldiers Washington sent a bigger force Little Turtle won an even bigger victory If you were President Washington, what would you do?

6 Washington turned to Anthony Wayne
General Wayne was a Revolutionary War hero Led forces against Native Americans Gathered for battle at a place where fallen trees covered the ground Wayne won a major victory at the Battle of the Fallen Timbers Battle broke the Native American hold on the Northwest

7 1795 Treaty of Greenville Defeated Native American nations gave up most lands in what is today the state of Ohio

8 The French Revolution Most Americans supported French revolutionaries
In the eyes of Americans, the French were following the lead of the United States in fighting monarchy It was extremely violent, with a period called the Reign of Terror Why did the French Revolution become controversial in the United States?

9 Why did Washington want to remain neutral?
By 1793, France and Britain were at war United States wanted to trade with BOTH sides: France and Britain Both countries began stopping American ships and taking cargoes So, why did Washington want to remain neutral?

10 Britain made matters WORSE…
The British made matters worse by the impressment of sailors –(took the sailors, and forced them to serve in the British navy) Washington tried to stay friendly with Britain: sent John Jay to London Jay returned with a treaty

11 The Jay Treaty How would YOU react to the Jay Treaty?
INSIDE THE JAY TREATY: U.S. agreed to pay debts Britain agreed to pay for ships taken Britain agreed to withdraw troops from the Northwest Territory Britain REFUSED to recognize the U.S. right to trade with France Britain REFUSED to stop impressment of U.S. soldiers Angered Republicans – claimed the U.S. had given too much and gotten too little Federalists liked the treaty – it kept peace with Britain How would YOU react to the Jay Treaty?

12 Washington’s Farewell Address
Two major points: Warned against political divisions at home Emphasized his belief that the U.S. not get entangled in the affairs of Europe (remain neutral) How would you support the statement, “George Washington was a great first president”?
