Outline EEA’s RBMP assessment - update EEA dataviewer Threshold values Pb query

3 Timeline for publications
EEA assessment of RBMPs 2018 Q1-Q2 – update following consultation and prepare for publication Publication of assessment expected by early July Commission’s report expected early July DG ENV water conference September 2018 EEA assessments on Chemicals in surface waters and Chemicals in marine waters – expected 2018

4 Significant effort required for monitoring and reporting
EEA dataviewer for RBMPs Significant effort required for monitoring and reporting Dataviewer aimed at making the reported data accessible at EU level Data are as reported by MS – some inconsistencies apparent Many permutations of views possible: “guidance” to be produced Welcome feedback on your experience with the tool

5 WISE WFD visualisation tool – list of views
Delineation of water bodies (number, length, area, natural, heavily modified and artificial) Ecological status and potential (status, confidence, status 2015 and expected good status, status 1st and 2nd RBMPs) Quality element status Surface water bodies: chemical status (status, confidence, status 2015 and expected good status, status 1st and 2nd RBMPs, priority substances causing failure) Surface water bodies: Pressures and impacts (pressure groups, detailed pressures, number of pressures per water body) Groundwater bodies: quantitative status (status, confidence, status 2015 and expected good status, status 1st and 2nd RBMPs, reason for failure) Groundwater bodies: chemical status (status, confidence, status 2015 and expected good status, status 1st and 2nd RBMPs, pollutants causing failure) Groundwater: Pressures and impacts (pressure groups, detailed pressures, number of pressures per water body) Monitoring (monitoring sites, monitored water bodies, details (quality elements, chemicals, threshold values etc.)) Methodologies (e.g. One-out-all-out; threshold delineation rivers or lakes, etc.)

13 Chemical status of all surface water bodies, with all priority substances (top) and without uPBTs (bottom) Source: Preliminary results based on WISE-SoW database including data from 25 Member States (EU28 except Greece, Ireland and Lithuania). Surface water bodies chemical status uPBT country Chemical status RBMP 1 and 2 For some surface water bodies in Poland (1265 WBs) and Italy (265 WBs), there is no information on the priority substances causing failure and it is therefore not possible to identify if the failure is caused by uPBTs or other priority substances.

17 Threshold values MS reported TVs for each substance, by RBD
This provides possibility for rapid comparison of TVs However, reporting has been difficult to process, with e.g. numbers (x.xx or x,xx), ranges (x – y; “<“), text (“Annex 0”, “Expert judgement”) and possible errors (“-99”) Welcome discussion in future towards making the TV reporting more streamlined

18 ECHA consultation on lead shot contamination
Request for evidence on contamination of wetlands / groundwater by lead shot. Ongoing public consultation (deadline 21 May 2018), to restrict the use of lead shot over European wetlands. Sufficient to send a comment including a list of sites located in European wetlands, where shooting ranges have triggered pollution due to the use of lead shot. A few lines mentioning which type of pollution (soil and/or water) and whether a remediation is needed or has occurred (if occurred, please indicate the approximate costs) Main link to the lead shot dossier List of benefits is available here: on page 228: E Benefits of the proposed restriction Comments can be provided here: Commenting on any aspects related to the Draft opinion of SEAC: Questions to

19 Thanks for listening – your comments and suggestions welcome.
Talk has been possible owing to efforts by colleagues in EEA, ETC, DG ENV, Bilbomatica – all reliant on information reported by Member States
