Figure 3 | Clinical trial design in charged-particle therapy (CPT). General procedure in CPT trials: patients in the control arm generally receive X-rays, unless the aim of the trial is to compare different charged particles (for example, protons versus carbon ions). Trials of X-rays versus protons or carbon ions compare different physical dose- distributions and the end point can be decreased toxicity (if the same dose to tumour is prescribed), or increased local disease control (if trials prescribe isotoxic doses). Trials comparing protons to carbon ions will have similar physical dose-distribution, and the main end point will be the effect of biological effectiveness. Durante, M. et al.
