Introduction to Microscopes

Eyepiece Body Tube Nosepiece Arm Low power objective Medium power objective Stage High power objective Stage clips Course Adjustment Diaphragm Fine Adjustment Light source Base

Eyepiece Contains the ocular lens which is the magnifying lens you look through. Typically has 10X magnification.

Connects the eyepiece to the objective lenses.
Body tube Connects the eyepiece to the objective lenses.

Arm Connects the lens system to the stage and the base. One hand should ALWAYS hold the arm (the other hand under base)

Stage Supports the slide that contains the specimen. Has a hole in its center to allow the light to reach the specimen.

Revolving nose piece Holds the objective lenses and can be rotated to switch between the different lenses.

Low power objective Additional lens that increases magnification. 4X magnification. What is the total magnification when using this objective?

Medium power objective
Additional lens that increases magnification. 10X magnification. What is the total magnification when using this objective?

High power objective Additional lens that increases magnification. 40X magnification. What is the total magnification when using this objective?

Diaphragm Located under the stage, this controls the amount of light that reaches the specimen from the light source.

Base Supports the microscope. When carrying the microscope, one hand should always support the base. (while the other hand holds the arm)

Fine adjustment Moves the stage slightly to fine tune the focusing of the specimen.

Coarse adjustment Moves the stage up and down for initial focusing of the specimen. It is never to be used with the high power objective lens.

The part of the microscope you look through 10x
