Warm UP What are the three main states of matter? How are they alike?
How are they different? How does a substance change from one state to the other? How do the substance’s molecules behave in each state?
3
Matter Anything that has mass and takes up space
Made up of much smaller particles known as atoms.
4
Who was Democritus? What did he do?
Born in Greece in 460 BC Died 370 BC (90 years old!) The atomic theory stated that “The universe is composed of two elements: the atoms and the void (empty space) in which they exist and move.” According to Democritus atoms were super tiny pieces of matter. Democritus hypothesized that atoms cannot be destroyed, are different sizes, shape and temperature, are always moving, and are invisible. Named these tiny particles “atomos” greek for “uncuttable”

A Quick Formative NOT for a grade!!!
I want to know what you already know!

ATOMS Atoms are the smallest unit of matter Mostly empty space
EXTREMELY small
7
Atomic Model

Formative – Part 2 In a different color fix any answers you feel like need changing. Turn it in!!! Safari Montage: Atoms and Molecules

You Try It Read the passage Fill in the diagram
Answer the questions on the back Hint: The answers are in the passage Use complete sentences What you don’t finish becomes homework!!!
