Worship idols for blessing, security, prosperity … … receive the opposite.
Worship gods who cannot help, comfort, rescue

When they seek God with all their heart & soul
Yhwh is merciful – not leave, forget, destroy (v 31)
Moses points to the story they have just lived
Did any people hear the voice of God?
Has any God ever taken a people for himself?

The God who calls them to a new life … … is the God they have just seen work
Because he “loved” and “chose” (v 37)
The true God is nothing like we would expect

But humans are easily deceived:

Work … success … “Phones” … Image … materialism … sex … money
