Science Project Items:
All of Packet – Past Due, P. 3-6 Poster/Presentations start Tomorrow Directions on P. 2 DO YOU KNOW? Define an atom and element. Behavior Log is filled out for 9/19/16 Copied Objective, HW into assignment list Think of a question to ask me
2
Alternate Assignment Order the scientific method
How can you use it in your experiments?/ In your daily life? Why should we always think using it? (Why is it good?) How do you make a project? Put everything in a poster to present with the Science Fair
3
Mantra - Your Turn! Today is a great day for science because:
Science is power. We are powerful because: We always make a difference.
4
This Week… Can’t help but think of home A place where Chemistry swirled, and I was never alone Parents who always questioned Dinner talks - always a lesson To my mother, everything made sense To be able to break life down into its simplest elements The tiniest part of existence So carefully found and compared yet seemingly so far from our lens
5
Goals * State the Objective(s)/Standard (s)- RI 7.2; W2; Sci 1a/2a
* State the Purpose (Big Idea) - Students can identify and explain how elements are organized on the periodic table to understand how they behave in reactions SWBAT summarize and analyze main ideas as they develop in a text about atoms and elements
6
Agenda I Do: Atoms and Elements/ The Periodic Table
We Do: Review GIST template Groups: Reading on The Sound of Atoms You Do: Text-Dependent Questions Summary/ Feedback/ Questions
7
Definitions: Chemistry Matter Atom Electron Proton Neutron Element
Periodic Table
8
Life Depends on Chemistry
Chemistry: The study of contents, shape, behavior, and change in matter. Matter: Anything that has mass and takes up space Make an observation of the outside. 5 senses! How do you think it is related to chemistry?
9
Atoms The smallest piece of matter There are 3 parts:
Electrons – Negative Protons – Positive Neutrons – No Charge ACT IT OUT!
10
Elements A substance of 2 or more of the same kind of atoms.
Let’s draw an atom!
11
The Periodic Table The periodic table has changed over time as new elements have been added to it. Explain the most likely reason scientists update the periodic table. 2. If you could organize your own periodic table for something, show how you would lay it out.
12
“The sound of atoms: Scientists communicate with matter at its smallest scales”
GIST Review: Who, What, Where, When, Why, How Quietly/In small groups (2-3 people) Stop often to decide on main ideas in the passage Other options: independently read, popcorn read, or read collectively. Silently/Independently Complete QUESTIONS 1-2 ONLY Write a GIST summary Share
13
Last Items/ Questions There are three parts to an atom: A proton, neutron, and electron. Need Chemistry help or want to talk about your grades? Office Hours Saturday, 12-1 at McDonald’s DEADLINES COMING UP: Make sure a guardian signed your COMPLETED packet! Poster/Presentation Wednesday/Thursday Biweekly Test 3 Wednesday/Thursday Element Symbol Worksheet Due Friday

GO GO FEEDBACK FRONTIER!
Miss K – In my baggie (Comments on my teaching, living up to my goals, and any personal things you need to privately tell me) Your peers – Feedback to 1 or 2 people… What is something you saw him/her do that matched up with our class values? Why was it really great to see this?
