Combined Cigna-Express Scripts to Move toward Total Healthcare Company
The top health plans build their internal PBM capabilities and continue to diversify their business mix in order to increase overall control over multiple healthcare delivery channels.
Cigna-Express Scripts launched an official transaction website a name of that reflects the growing focus on moving toward a more patient-centric, total care business approach.
The name also reflects the growing need for efficiency and transparency in healthcare, since the PBM industry remains under scrutiny, especially Express Scripts over the past year.
The Cigna and Express Scripts move will likely prompt others to look for more opportunities to expand their business mix and their internal capabilities (in particular, Anthem with IngenioRx).
Specialty pharmacies and healthcare providers (e.g., medical groups) will likely be the primary targets for additional mergers and acquisitions activity or strategic alliances.
