2 Case Study – How do we get more Junior students interested in sport?
Environmental Study SOCIAL CHANGE students choosing leisure activities other than sport changes in the work place impact on availability of parent help in sport students working part-time and unable to commit to team sport the opportunity sport provides to promote pro-social values for schools and community CHANGING NATURE OF SPORT move away from traditional team sport involving practices & commitment greater number of lifestyle sport options eg gym less commitment to club membership move toward informal social sport options participation rates in organized sport falling for players, coaches and officials club membership threatened teachers as coaches have dropped

3 RSO need assistance in meeting school Health & Safety policies
EDUCATIONAL FOCUS Assessment practices and academic achievement reduces time for both teachers and students to be involved in sport Access to sport participation data can assist schools to strategically plan sport initiatives Research through the SIE project clearly identifies the potential for sport to raise levels of student engagement and achievement Opportunities exist for students to gain NCEA credits within the sport context HEALTH & SAFETY increasing complex Health and Safety requirements impact on organizational capability and time resourcing RSO need assistance in meeting school Health & Safety policies

4 Modified Sport Week & The McKean Shield Concept
Completely different offering of sport was needed: More Social – Music, BBQ, Fun games between matches, teacher teams No entry cost Take the focus off winning – games are still competitive but winning the competition is not the outcome of participation Continuous play throughout the day with small breaks between games Round robin format – teams regrouped after 3 games More opportunity for ‘like – skilled’ matches Teams of 5 Games are self officiated

5 McKean Shield Our version of the Ranfurly Shield
A school that holds the Shield must try to defend it throughout the day All teams from a school must defend the shield before the same team can have a second go at defending it – ensures that not only the ‘top teams’ get to play for the shield If you can successfully defend the shield 10 times or more your school name on the shield

6 Did it work?? It has been a PHENOMINAL SUCCESS!!
Has gone from 4 sports to 5 sports held over a school week in November 2013 – 592 students 2014 – 893 students 2015 – 1000+??? The Modified Sports are selected in Term 1 and handed to HOD’s PE along with lessons plans so that students and teachers are familiar with games well in advance of the week TSSPA are now looking at having ‘Camps Week’ etc as part of the Modified Sports Week The McKean Shield has become something all schools want to hold!
