Main purposes of the project
hhhhh Creation of a multi-purpose network of distributed computing of a town scale DUBNA-GRID Main purposes of the project The “Dubna-Grid” Project is aimed at the creation of a distributed environment of metacomputing on the basis of non-loaded computing resources of “office” computers. The project foresees creation of a common pool of accessible nodes of more than 1200 units. NEC-2005, Varna, Bulgaria

DUBNA-GRID Implementation of the “Dubna-Grid” project will allow:
hhhhh Creation of a multi-purpose network of distributed computing of a town scale DUBNA-GRID Implementation of the “Dubna-Grid” project will allow: to create a unified computing environment of the city of Dubna (metacluster) on the basis of the resources of scientific, research and educational institutions, in particular, JINR subdivisions, University “Dubna”, secondary schools and other organizations concerned; to create a segment of the international Grid-infrastructure, operating in frames of various Grid systems (LGG, NorduGrid and OSG). To perform research of control, security and stability within the Grid environment. to provide execution of large-scale computing tasks of JINR and other enterprises of Dubna scientific – industrial complex and other organizations concerned; to distribute experience of creation of the city segment of the Grid-infrastructure for creation of similar systems in other Russian cities. hhhhh Creation of a multi-purpose network of distributed computing of a town scale DUBNA-GRID Motivation of the participating organizations The Joint Institute for Nuclear Research is interested in attraction of additional computing resources in order to conduct research work in frames both the current experiments and the experiments that are being prepared at the LHC accelerator at CERN – ATLAS, ALICE, CMS. The University “Dubna” has a wide program of the development of the educational process and the training of specialists for work with advanced information technologies. In addition, the university is interested in organizing a scientific – research programme with participation of students and post-graduates of both the university “Dubna” and the JINR University Center on the issues related to information technologies. hhhhh Creation of a multi-purpose network of distributed computing of a town scale DUBNA-GRID Motivation of the participating organizations The city of Dubna as a City of Science, is interested in creation of informational – computational infrastructure for high-technology production and scientific research as well as for using the information technologies for the solving of tasks of various spheres of the city life. The solving of such tasks in frames of the city structure may be planned for the first time in the world practice. The University of Lund (Sweden) and Chicago (USA) are interested in a joint testing and using of the Grid systems for the tasks of real data processing. Besides, in order to improve the available systems in the future, additional project participants and extension of cooperation in the area of software development are required. Administration of the city of Dubna
hhhhh Creation of a multi-purpose network of distributed computing of a town scale DUBNA-GRID Administration of the city of Dubna provides an informational – educational network with a total number of computers of almost 500 units (in addition to its main purpose); provides a municipal data link; modernizes the computers operating within the Project; takes part in funding the creation of the 1 Gbps computer communication link Moscow - Dubna. Joint Institute for Nuclear Research
hhhhh Creation of a multi-purpose network of distributed computing of a town scale DUBNA-GRID Joint Institute for Nuclear Research develops and organizes a testing exploitation of the test-bed architecture (the infrastructure that provides solutions for scaling and replication) ; provides certification (receiving a passport of the equipment and passports for the main performers of the work) for work in the international Grid systems; installs various Grid systems on the test-bed sites; installs a united Grid laboratory for research in the field of Grid technologies and organization of training specialists of a corresponding profile; purchases equipment required for creation of a managing servers pool; builds up the 1 Gbps data link Moscow – Dubna. University “Dubna” DUBNA-GRID
hhhhh Creation of a multi-purpose network of distributed computing of a town scale DUBNA-GRID University “Dubna” provides creation of a server center for the maintenance of the university segment of the Grid infrastructure; provides 500 computers from the university network (apart from their main purpose); takes part in working out the course on studying the Grid technologies and training specialists in frames of the joint Grid-laboratory; develops new information – retrieval systems based on the Grid technologies for electronic libraries of Dubna and Moscow region. Test infrastructure at JINR
hhhhh Creation of a multi-purpose network of distributed computing of a town scale DUBNA-GRID Test infrastructure at JINR Creation of the test complex (the Grid test-bed) is in frames of the joint Grid laboratory “GridLab” organized at LIT JINR. The test-bed is required in order to give a work-out to the system of automatic scaling of the cluster nodes, check-up and test exploitation of new versions of the software for nodes and servers of the meta-cluster, development of system of measuring the meta-cluster performance. A premise has been equipped, a server and 6 nodes have been ordered, regulations of the GridLab are being elaborated. NEC-2005, Varna, Bulgaria

Organization problems

The round-the-clock operation (kids work in the classes) requires control over temperature in the premise and installation of an improved ventilation or air-conditioning system as well as solution of the problem of a high-level noise in the room. Training of system administrators of computer classes. The introduction of the software that is unknown for the system administrators of school classes as well as impossibility of determining the cause of failure in the operation of the equipment bring additional disorder to the current exploitation of the classes and holding regular lessons in them. That is why the training of school teachers in the foundations of the Grid technologies is a necessary condition of further successful work. NEC-2005, Varna, Bulgaria

Organization problems
hhhhh Creation of a multi-purpose network of distributed computing of a town scale DUBNA-GRID Organization problems Necessity of setting up fire-alarm networks and organization of a round-the-clock monitoring in frames of the whole city. The maintenance of round-the-clock work of the classes at the absence of visual control over the equipment at night requires development and introduction of fire-alarm networks as well as organization of a round-the-clock duty for monitoring the status of all computers of the city network used for computations.
