What is a Short Story? A short story is a piece of prose fiction, usually under 10,000 words, which can be read at one sitting.

Why is a Short Story Important?
It’s a distinct art form (as is a poem, novel and play) Every word counts – it’s a gem to be pruned and polished by the writer. It’s a form much cultivated by American writers. Ideal for high school study because it can be read in one sitting.

What is symbolism? A “symbol” is something that stands for something else, such as: CROSS = CHRISTIANITY In addition, there are natural symbols. DARKNESS = EVIL LIGHT = GOOD

Setting The time and location in which a story takes place is called the setting. Place: Geographical location Time: When is the story taking place (historical period, time of day, year) Weather Conditions: Rainy? Sunny? Stormy? Mood: What feeling is created at the start of the story?

Characterization The characteristics of a person: Physical appearance
Actions Thoughts What the character says What other say to/about the character

Conflict Person vs. person Person vs. nature Person vs. society
Person vs. self Person vs. supernatural

Theme …is the meaning or purpose of the story. A theme should –
Be specific to the story Provide unity to the story Be universal Be an integral part of the story

Point of View First Person Major – main character tells own story
First Person Minor – a minor character who “happens to be there” tell the story Third Person – narrator knows thoughts of all characters in the story
