1 Civil Societies IB HL

2 Definition A Civil Society is an organisation/movement that works in the area between the household, the private sector and the state to negotiate matters of public concern. Civil Societies include non-government organisations (NGO’s), community groups, trade unions, academic institutions and faith-based organisations.

3 Types Global Civil Societies are mixed: Liberal, Democratic, Peaceful, Illiberal, Anti-Democratic, Violent. If Oxfam, and Greenpeace are a Civil Society, then arguably so is Al-Qaeda.

4 NGO’s NGO’s in 22 nations employ 19 million workers, recruited 10 million volunteers and generated $1.1 trillion dollars of revenue. In 1960, each country had citizens participating in 122 NGO’s, and by 1990, the number had increased to over 500. In western Europe 66% of NGO’s have been formed since 1970. There are over 2 million NGO’s in the USA.

5 Activities Using Geography For The IB Diploma P , answer the following… Define Global Civil Society. Using Figure 1 (P225), what are the different responses of civil society to globalisation. Which responses do you agree/disagree with? Why? Using Figure 3 (P226), explain what it shows and the dilemma we live in. What are the Trade Union responses to globalisation?
