3 Syllabus Pass/Fail To pass, one must satisfy ALL requirements of this course. Requirements R-01 to R-12

4 R-01 Each student shall research and use Microsoft Word write a paper on a computer science or software engineering topic. The topic must be pre-approved by the instructor, and the paper shall not mimic or duplicate what is covered in a CS or SE course with the possible exception of including a brief amount of background material from the course. The CS4110 topics MUST have significant CS content and the SE4110 topics MUST have significant SE content.

5 R-02 Your papers shall be your work; plagiarism will not be tolerated and will result in failing the course. Write the paper yourself Peer review by two students Instructor’s review Presentation Evaluation by students and faculty members

6 R-03 All papers shall include at least four substantial references for your topic. These references shall come from computer technical books, journals, or conference papers. Popular trade magazines such as Byte and Computer World are NOT considered suitable. Material from the WWW can be used if the source is a reputable source and the URL is likely to be stable for at least the next 2 years.

7 R-04 The paper shall be in journal style. Please see Paper Style Guide.

8 R-05 The paper must have a 100 to 200 words abstract. This will be forwarded to the class and CSSE faculty as well as published on our website to attract people to your presentation. Look at journals in the library for examples of abstracts.

9 R-06 All journal style papers with the abstracts shall be submitted to D2L no later than 7:00 pm, September 16, 2018 (Sunday of Week 3). Name convention: UserName_Topic.doc(x) Examples: BallwegCa_SemanticWeb.docx Harrerj_Mac_OSX_Development.doc Sunday is the first day of week

10 R-07 Each student shall review two papers by other students. You may use the review tool in Word to track changes and add comments to the document you review. The reviews must be submitted to D2L no later than 7:00 pm, September 23, 2018 (Sunday of Week 4).

11 Submission of Review Documents
Two files for each reviewed paper File name convention: Reviewer-Review-Author.doc(x) Reviewer-Paper-Author.doc(x) (Username for Reviewer and Author) Example: YangQ_Review_BallwegCa.doc YangQ_Paper_BallwegCa.docx

12 R-08 Each student shall revise their paper based on the peer reviews and common sense. If there are questions regarding the appropriateness of the review please see the instructor. The final version, publication ready, paper shall be submitted electronically to the instructor no later than 7:00 pm, September 30, 2018 (Sunday of Week 5).

13 R-09 Each student shall give a presentation on his/her paper. The presentation shall be minute using PowerPoint or other pre-approved (by the instructor) technology.

14 R-10 Each student must ask questions during at least five presentations about other students’ presentations and shall complete presentation review forms that are provided.

15 R-11 Each student shall submit a signed Copyright Permission Form.

16 R-12 You shall attend the classes and attendance will be taken at each class.
