Language Expansion Implied conditionals
A conditional statement can be expressed without using if. This is an implied conditional statement. I would have tried to invent something, but I didn’t have a good idea. (Implied condition = If I had had a good idea…) He read the instructions; otherwise he wouldn’t have known how to use the camera. (Implied condition = If he hadn’t read the instructions...) The words otherwise and but often appear in implied conditional statements.

The result clause of an implied conditional statement still uses conditional verbs. I would have tried to invent something, but I couldn’t think of a good invention. He read the instructions; otherwise he wouldn’t have known how to use the camera.

Quick Check Rewrite the sentences using implied conditionals.
1. I would have tried to buy the gadget if I’d known about it. I would have tried to buy the gadget, but I didn’t know about it. 2. If he hadn’t given me the money, he would have spent it. He gave me the money; otherwise he would have spent it. 3. She might have done well at school if she had tried. She might have done well at school, but she didn’t try. 4. If I hadn’t taken risks, I would have had regrets. I took risks; otherwise I would have had regrets.
