Intro to Heat Get out your notebook and title it “Heat”. You will need colored pencils today. Think Pair Share with a neighbor about what heat is.

Then you have witnessed heat, but how would you define it??
What is Heat? Ever feel the warmth from a fire? Touch a hot iron and burn yourself? Watch water boil on the stove? Then you have witnessed heat, but how would you define it??

What is Heat? Heat is the movement of energy from a warm object to a cool object. Energy passes through atoms Temperature is a measure of how much energy is in an object.

Measuring Heat of water
Celsius Fahrenheit Freezing – 0 degrees Boiling – 100 degrees Freezing – 32 degrees Boiling – 212 degrees

Thermal Equilibrium Molecules move from warm to cold until they reach a balanced temperature This balance is called thermal equilibrium.

Insulators & Conductors

Conductors Some materials like to pass heat energy through them and do it easily. These materials are called conductors Metal and glass are two examples of conductors (You definitely don’t want to touch a metal pan when it’s on the stove!)

Insulators Other materials do not transfer heat energy easily or it may take longer for the heat to pass through. Foam and plastic are both good insulators Example: plastic is normally used for coolers to keep heat from entering the container (which keeps your food cold)

Vocabulary Solid particles vibrate in one place Liquid particles spin and move closely together Gas particles spin and move fast and far away from each other

Vocabulary Expansion Contraction
as molecules are heated they spread out as they move around quickly and cause objects to become larger (expand) Heating = Bigger as molecules are cooled they move closer together and cause objects to shrink (contract) Cooling = Smaller

How Does Heat Move? Heat moves through objects in three main ways:
1. Conduction 2. Convection 3. Radiation

Conduction When heat energy passes from one object to another when they touch Example: If you hold an ice cube in your hand the ice cube melts. The heat energy passes from your hand to the ice.

Convection Happens in liquid and gas particles
Example: Air circulating through your room, water boiling in a pot, and lava lamps are examples of convection

Radiation When heat energy does not need to travel through particles it is known as radiation. Heat energy can travel through electromagnetic waves such as infrared, microwaves and visible light. Example: The heat from the sun travels by radiation

Your Assignment Draw a scene where radiation, convection, and conduction are all taking place. Label each of the three forms of heat transfer. On the back write a story involving your scene (mentioning the use of the three forms of heat transfer)

Please get out the sheet from yesterday and continue working on it. Today we will watch Bill Nye: Heat and then grade it after so have a pen for later.

Today we will be conducting 2 lab competitions.
Brainstorm how you can make an ice cube stay unmelted. Brainstorm how you can make an ice cube melt the fastest.

Please grab a book from the front and get out a few scrap sheets of paper.
Today we will be reading an article on heat and creating questions for others to answer from the text. Write your question on one of the sheets of scrap paper. You need three questions.

Today we will be reviewing how to graph and which graph is the best to use. Please grab the sheet from the front and have a pencil and colored pencils ready. You get to pick your seat so choose wisely or you will have this privilege revoked!

Today we will be completing “Goldilocks” lab but with the real story!
Grab the sheet from the front and begin reading over the lab. You will need a pencil and colored pencils as well. Write your hypothesis. Quiz on Monday!
