Identifying Job Expectations
Educational Qualifications College diploma Educational certificates Transcript of Records Professional Qualifications Valid professional license Professional Certificates Professional Skills Training Certificates Apprenticeship Professional Experience Employment Records Recent and past Employment Certificates Referrals Job Expectations can be identified by checking on the Educational Qualifications, Professional Qualifications, Professional Skills, and Professional Experience of the staff nurse. Educational qualification can be identified through the College or University diploma and other educational certificates. Authenticity of the diploma however must be verified. The college transcript of records will also provide an additional hint of the staff nurses qualification however; there is a possibility that marks as reflected on the records do not reflect the actual skills and abilities of a nurse. Applicant with high marks is always desired but can possibly lead to wrong choice of applicant but individuals with high marks are usually of advantage. Professional Qualifications can be represented by valid professional nursing license, professional or governing body registration license and other professional license certificates. Authenticity of the certificates must be verified and the professional license must be valid to ensure that the staff is currently in active practice and is fully registered. Professional skills may be reflected through training certificates however loads of certificates does not always ensure that a staff nurse is professionally skillful. An apprenticeship is a much better way of assessing the professional skills of an individual as the actual skills can be seen in action. Professional experience is most often based on employment records employment certificates, and referrals. The more experienced staff is more desirable however the length of experience does not always ensure that a certain staff nurse is highly skillful. As with other papers, professional experience documents needs to be verified for authenticity.

Gathering Data to Describe Job Functions
Job analysis questionnaire Survey question to current staff nurses. Observation on a functional nursing unit. A research focusing on staff nursing activities. Healthcare setting policy and procedure. Studying the results of nursing audits. Gathering the data to describe job functions requires full understanding on the organization and function of the current nursing units. Different data can be gathered through observation and undergoing researches on the past and current nursing functions and activities and the different factors involved. A job analysis questionnaire will also help to provide some data that may be important in describing job functions. Similarly, a survey question with the current nurses as the subject will also help to broaden the data gathered. >>Direct observation of a functional nursing unit probably is one among the best sources of data that will offer clearer description of a job function. A full knowledge and understanding of the healthcare setting policy and procedure is very important in determining the nursing job functions. The results of nursing audits will also offer broader knowledge of how is the nursing performance of the staff. By knowing so, enhancement of job functions, and not just description of the existing function will be given a consideration.

Creating a Job Description
Tasks Describe the designated task per policy and standards. Duties and responsibilities Describe specific duties and responsibilities per unit standards. Activities Describe the activities based on current unit activities. Performance results Describe the expected performance based on previous unit evaluation. Job description will serve as a guide to a staff nurse of what she is supposed to do and what are the things that she not supposed to do. The tasks that a staff nurse must are usually based on the setting where the new nurse will be posted. Depending on the setting, the task may vary thus it is important to have broad knowledge of the different units. That can be the reason why formulation of job descriptions usually involves the nursing department. Knowledge of unit organization is very important to know better as to what tasks are expected from a staff nurse in a certain unit. The designated task must be in concordance with the facility policy and procedures and the standard protocols. Detailing the duties and responsibilities of every nurse is very significant for a safe and efficient functioning of a staff nurse in accordance to the guidelines. Sspecific duties and responsibilities are usually formulated according to the policy of the healthcare setting, standards of the nursing units and with the application of the nursing laws. >>Every unit specifies the activities of a staff nurse while in place. Specific details of what activities are expected from a nurse can be well formulated if sufficient data on unit organization and unit functions are well understood. Detailing the activities requires following the hospital policy, unit standards and the nursing law. The activities included are usually based o the actual unit staff nurses activities. The performance results can be detailed based on the unit staff nurses performance based on previous unit evaluation and observation.

Determining the Suitability of Teamwork for this Position
Direct unit observation Unit manager’s evaluation Individual feedback Outcome of the unit performance Observing unit staff cooperation Except when a solitary staff nurse is assigned in any facility, staff nursing job generally requires teamwork to be fully functional.. Team nursing as what it is called is the most common method of how the nursing unit functions. A unit may function by allocating each nurse individually with a certain patient or patients but unit still needs to work as teamwork. For example lifting and turning a patient is a difficult task if done by an individual nurse alone. Four hands or more will make carrying out the task easily than with only two hands. In another simpler example, nurses while on duty needs to take meals at specified time. In the absence a certain nurse, another nurse takes over. However for determination of teamwork, there are many ways that can be done easily to check on that. Direct unit observation will easily give an idea to the observer. The unit manager’s evaluation will also provide some additional information. The individual feedback from the unit staff will provide good information on how the nursing staff works. The outcome of the unit performance and observation of the unit staff cooperation will “speak more loudly than words.” There are circumstances that teamwork may not be suitable for staff nursing position, however teamwork is more perceived as a necessity for such position regardless of its suitability.
