1 Political FORCES and Political CLUBS
French Revolution Ms. Dow

2 There were now three different political forces at work in France;
1. The Radicals who wanted a Republic (a democracy without a king) like the U.S. 2. The Moderates who wanted a constitutional monarchy (a democracy with a king) like Britain. 3. The Monarchists who wanted to restore the King to power. The Monarchists were causing problems in that they were working outside of France trying to convince others to restore France to its old system.

3 Marat, Danton and Robespierre were the radical leaders of the revolution and had little time for anyone who even sympathized with the Monarchy. Other countries in Europe were nervous with what was going on in France and were supporting the Monarchist. The people of France responded by going to war against Austria.

4 King Louis was charged with encouraging his Monarchist supporters outside of France to get rid of the National Assembly and was eventually guillotined.

5 Political Clubs Many people joined political clubs during the revolution, and these clubs often spearheaded some of the revolutionary changes that were happening to how the French governed themselves. Three of the most influential political clubs were the Girondists, Jacobins and the Sans Culottes.
