2 What kind of feelings are associated with immigration?
Essential question: What is immigration? What kind of feelings are associated with immigration?

3 What is immigration/emigration?
On a piece of paper… write 2 things you know about immigration

4 Ellis Island 1900 What does this picture tell you about the time period? About the people?

7 Sandy Hook, NJ

8 The huddled masses: America’s immigration history

9 Reflection: Write a telegram home as if you were an immigrant coming to America for the first time… (telegrams typically cost a penny a word) In your telegram, you need to tell your family, whom you left behind, what your feelings are being in a new land and that you have arrived safely You have only $.20 to spend… choose your words wisely (connotation)

10 Day 2: essential questions
Why is it important to closely read a text? What words/phrases let me know the tone of the text?

11 Break apart the prompt:
Write an expository essay explaining the author’s changing tone about moving to an unfamiliar place. Analyze the impact Cahan’s specific word choices have on establishing tone, including analogies and allusions. Draw evidence from the passage to support your analysis. Develop your topic with relevant, well-chosen facts, concrete details, or other information and examples. Demonstrate command of the conventions of standard English, capitalization, punctuation, and spelling in your response.

12 Close read/annotations:
Chunk the text into 4 chunks- this will help to focus your reading more intently Choose words that show a connotation and help you identify the narrators tone. Annotate each chunk with an “I wonder” statement (what does it make you think about?) and a summary (what is does that section tell you about the narrator’s experience?)

13 Close read questions: What is the narrator’s feelings about coming to a new place at the beginning of the reading? What tone do the words in the first paragraph support? What is the immigrant’s arrival in America being compared to? Why is the narrator making this comparison? How does the narrator feel about being in a new land by the end of the passage? What are some clue words or phrases used in the last chunk to support the narrator’s feelings?

14 Day 3: planning map Why do I need to organize your information?
How can I organize my information to clearly support my analysis?

15 Thesis: What are you going to talk to your reader about?
This should answer prompt and have sufficient evidence in the text to support… In The Rise of David Levinsky Book V: I Discover America, Chapter 1, Abraham Cahan’s tone changes throughout the passage from a _____________________ tone to a _____________________one.

16 1st body paragraph: I do Transition: First,
Topic sentence: Cahan’s word choice at the beginning of the passage establishes an uncertain tone. Supporting details: The narrator states: “Who can depict the feeling of desolation, homesickness, uncertainty, and anxiety with which an emigrant makes his first voyage across the ocean?” The narrator compares his doubt to Christopher Columbus’ men’s doubt of ever reaching the land they were looking for. Cahan describes the narrator’s trip as one of a “hopeless monotony of water.”

17 2nd body paragraph: We do
Transition: Next, Topic sentence: Cahan’s tone moves into one of excitement and amazement. Supporting details: ____________________________

18 3rd Body Paragraph: you do
Transition: _________________________ Topic Sentence: ____________________________________ Supporting details: ___________________________

19 Day 4: Introduction and quote sandwiches

20 EQ How Do I Craft an Introduction? Have you ever jumped/been thrown into a pool? Were you ready for it? How did it feel?

21 An introduction needs to gradually get to the subject you will be talking about in the essay…
Like giving someone stairs to walk into the pool.

22 Parts of an intro Hook (2-3 sentences): General information about the topic to gradually get to the specific point of the thesis. Assume the reader does not know much about the text. Thesis (1 sentence): What your essay will be about. Preview (1-2 sentences): Showing what 3 supporting details you will talk about later in the essay.

23 Example (Label Hook, Thesis, and Preview)
Humans have a complicated relationship with the world around us. We love nature and animals, but also want to be protected from them. This is because we recognize nature can be both wonderful and dangerous. The short story “Woodsong” by Gary Paulsen taught the reader to respect nature for it’s wonder and danger. It developed this theme through the words used to describe the animals/wilderness, the actions of Scarhead the bear, and the lesson the narrator learned at the end of the story.

24 EQ: How do I use quotes to support my explanatory essay?
Activator: What do we put into a sandwich? Why do we use bread on the top/bottom of the sandwich?

25 Quoting a text: What is it?
Handout… What 3 things do I need to do to properly use a quote?

26 Quoting a text: How do I do it?
Quote Sandwich 1. Who said it? 2. What quote, where did it come from? 3. What does it mean/how does it support your thesis?

27 Practice: Quote Sandwich (2 sentences) We Do
Pick a quote from the text “the Woman Called Moses” related Introduce the quote (use suggestions for how to word this on the 2nd page of your quote packet.) Quote the text (don’t forget the quotation marks) and add the line number in parenthesis at the end In the next sentence, explain what it means/how it supports the thesis.

28 Word Wall: Quote Sandwich You Do
Create a 2 sentence quote sandwich for your 2nd or 3rd paragraph (supporting Tubman being courageous helping her family or the Underground Railroad. Must follow the rules from the packet/look like the example on the board. Post it on the word wall when you are done!!

29 Day 5: Let’s write about it
