Annotation and Summarizing
3
Ways to Annotate Annotate: adding notes to a text or diagram, giving an explanation or comment How: Identify difficult vocabulary Chunk the reading Write notes on the side Can be a summary of the chunk Should capture main idea of the chunk Ask questions that help you think deeper Make connections to things discussed in class or other knowledge Can be a sentence or bullet points
4
The Notes on the Side When summarizing a chunk of the text use objective language when possible POWER VERBS
5
Let’s Try It - Activity Skim & identify difficult vocab (5 min)
Jurisprudence – the study of law Denigrates – to make it less worthy, talk down about Vitriolic – filled with hate Picketing – carry protest signs Censor – to edit to your advantage Imminent lawless action – something illegal is about to happen Narrowly tailored – very narrow view Municipal – having to do with a city Begin reading and chunk sections Write notes on side while reading
6
Summarizing After you’ve read and annotated a document you are ready to write an objective summary Objective Summary: A summary that relies solely on the text and is not a reflection of your opinion of that text.
7
How to Summarize Step 1: Read and annotate a document
Step 2: Combine information from annotating into a paragraph Should have main idea of the document as a whole A sentence for each chunk (use power verbs) Add transitions to help your paragraph flow
8
Transition Words Look at the ones in your handout
9
Let’s Try It - Activity Review & revise annotations
What was the main idea of the document? Were there multiple? Was there evidence or examples to support main idea? Combine information into a paragraph Use transition words/sentences to make your paragraph flow Make sure to capture main idea of text This should be in your own words
