2
What causes convection Currents? What are Convection Currents?
Key Questions? What causes convection Currents? Uneven heating of the Earth by the sun. What are Convection Currents? The cycling of air and water determined by their densities. Hot air is less dense so it rises, Cold air is more dense so it sinks
3
What is Wind? Wind is the movement of air from an area of higher pressure to an area of lower pressure. Warmer air expands, becoming less dense than colder air. This causes air pressure to be generally lower where air is heated.
4
What are global winds Patterns of wind that consistently and constant all over the globe. Caused by convection currents.

7
What are the air masses over the United States?
Large bodies of air that that have particular characteristics that can be determined by their names. These masses are named after the place that they originate frome.
8
Air Masses Continental Arctic: Very cold and dry. Maritime tropical:
Maritime polar Cool and damp, bringing cloudy weather. Maritime tropical: Warm and very humid, forming over the Gulf of Mexico. Continental tropical: Very hot and dry, forming over Mexico and the Southwest. Continental polar: Cold and dry, forming further south than Arctic air masses.
9
Breeze Enthusiast Two types of Breezes both are causes by the uneven heating of the Earth by the sun. Sea Breeze Land Breeze
10
Sea Breeze As the air over the land heats up the cold air over the water moves in under it.
11
Land Breeze The land cools off quicker than the water. As the air above the water moves up the air from the land moves under and over the water.
12
Francis Beaufort and the Wind Scale
Irish Royal Navy officer who came up with a way to measure breezes that affected sales. This device is called a wind scale.
