1 Unit 3: Natural Resources
Lesson 3.1: natural Resources in Spanish-Speaking Countries

2 Essential Question What are the interrelationships of the Latin American resources with the rest of the world? What are the natural resources in Latin America?

3 Brainstorming The purpose of this activity is to assess your current knowledge of natural resources. You will be separated in to 7 groups. When I say “GO,” brainstorm with you group members examples of natural resources that would fall under the category. You will have two minutes at each station.

4 All natural resources fall in to two categories: renewable and non-renewable.
At your final station, determine whether or not the resources listed are renewable or non-renewable. Now list your top five examples and/or uses, and be prepared to explain how and why you classified them as you did.

5 China Shopping for Latin American Oil, Food, and Minerals
Read the article by Ian James. Highlight or underline all of the countries mentioned and their resource relationship with China.

6 Latin Pulse: Natural Resources
Watch the following video from Latin Pulse and try to answer the questions to the best of your ability. When the video is finished compare you answers with your partner.

7 Let’s review the Man-Nature Continuum.
How did the video portray the view of nature? How does the view portrayed in the video relate to internal and external control end of the spectrum?

8 Chilean Miners Rescue What type of country, individualistic or collectivistic, do you think Chile would be? WHY?

9 Read the article about the rescue of the Chilean Miners in 2010.
In your journals, explain how the miners exhibited the characteristics of a collectivistic culture.

10 The article explains how the miners focused on the group to take care of one another.
Relationships were important and there was community collaborations. They functioned as a family. The individual was second.

11 The Miners One Year Later
Chilean-miners-sift-through-trauma Let’s discuss how the media affected the way in which the miners acted.

12 The Drug Trade Latin America is known for its fertile soil and climate. Wheat and soybeans, such as what is grown in Argentina, are just one example. There is another, more lucrative, type of crop – illegal drugs.

13 Read the article by Tim Rogers and write down in your journals about the drug wars in Central America. What are there reasons drugs are being grown and trafficked in this area? What problems is this causing in the area? What is a possible solution mentioned?
