In writing a rubric could be a summative (initial) or formative (final) evaluation.
Rubrics can be used in all content areas.
A rubric clarifies how the student earned

MEAP using a scale of 1-6.
Using similar scale in class is one way to help students become accustomed to MEAP scoring.

Teachers in other curriculums are using rubrics too. In my building, the math and science teachers want to use an uniform writing rubric for all content areas.
Benefits:
Students evaluated by same criteria.
Saves checking time by teacher.
Can be used, in conferences, to show student strengths and weakness.
