Relative Age of Rocks Activity
Using the Laws of Horizontality, Superposition, Cross Cutting Relationships, and Inclusion, demonstrate your understanding of geologic principles by unraveling the sequence of geologic events shown in each diagram. Include deposition of each rock formation, and any events like tilting, folding, faulting, igneous intrusion, or erosion. List the layers from oldest (on the bottom) to youngest (on top).
2
Problem #4 Youngest Oldest B - basalt A - gneiss Principles Used:
Principle of Inclusion *there is no unconformity (the squiggly line is the igneous rock intrusion, B - basalt)
3
Problem #5 Youngest Oldest F - granite B - fault A - basalt
C - sandstone D - shale E - limestone Principles Used: Law of Superposition Oldest Law of Cross-cutting Relationships
4
Problem #7 Youngest Oldest A - sandstone B - conglomerate
F - unconformity (erosion) folding - E,D,C C - shale Principles Used: D - limestone Law of Superposition E - shale Law of Original Horizontality Oldest Unconformity
5
Problem #8 Youngest Oldest G - granite H - fault A - limestone
B - shale C - unconformity (erosion) Principles Used: tilting - F,E,D Law of Superposition D - siltstone Law of Original Horizontality E - conglomerate F - sandstone Cross-cutting Relationships Oldest Unconformity
