Mixtures Lab
2
Mixtures Lab I. Purpose: -To differentiate between different types of mixtures in the lab (homogeneous vs. heterogeneous, solutions vs. colloids vs. suspensions) II. Procedure: As directed (with laser safety concern).
3
Mixtures Lab Data: Make table as shown next slide……
4
III. Data: Mixture Color Clarity Settle? Tyndall Effect Type of A B C
(clear/cloudy) Settle? (particles visible?) Tyndall Effect Type of A B C D filtrate
5
Questions (use complete sentences):
1. How does the Tyndall Effect work? 2. If you had a gray mixture that had particles collected on the bottom, was cloudy, and showed a strong Tyndall effect, what kind of mixture is it? “Shake Well” 3. If you had a green mixture that was clear, had no Tyndall effect, and no suspended particles or precipitate, what kind of mixture is it? 4. If you had a red mixture that was clear, showed a strong Tyndall effect, but had no particles on the bottom, what kind of mixture is it? 5. Can you filter a suspension and make it a solution? Why?
6
V. Conclusion: Be sure to include a discussion of how one can discern differences between the various types of mixtures.
