2 BUREAUCRACY A Complex system of government with many, departments, rules, and people in a chain of command. This includes the President’s cabinet, regulatory agencies, and other independent agencies.

4 The Federal Bureaucracy carries out programs of Congress in 3 ways:
1. They put new laws into effect Ex-Law is passed to create a new national park. It would be implemented by the Dept of Interior.

Definition: a group of presidential advisors that include the head of the 15 top-level executive departments. (Part of the bureaucracy)

9 Who is on the cabinet? Heads of depts are called secretaries Dept of Justice is called Attorney General Appointed by the President with Senate approval The Vice President, chief of staff, press secretary, and other officials often join

11 How did the Cabinet get its start?
Article II states: [The President] may require the Opinion, in writing, of the principal Officer in each of the executive Departments, upon any subject relating to the Duties of their respective Offices. No specific details about departments or how they are structured. -

George Washington created first depts 1st cabinet: three departments State – Thomas Jefferson War (now defense) – Henry Knox Treasury Alexander Hamilton The cabinet has developed out of usage and tradition

13 What are the Duties and when do they meet?
Advise the president about problems surrounding their department Meetings Meet whenever the president wants PRESIDENT DOESN’T HAVE TO LISTEN TO THE CABINET!!!

14 INDEPENDENT AGENCIES Not part of the cabinet, President gets to appoint directors, with Senate approval. The executive branch has 100’s of independent agencies Three kinds: Regulatory agencies Government Corporations Executive Agencies
