1 Bioaccumulation In Aquatic
By: Raphael, Elizabeth, Fernando, Emma, scott

2 The reason i chose because it explains bioaccumulation in a pacman like style 0:00 to 1:45

3 I chose it because it is educational 0:00 to 0:33

4 Starts at 0:00 Ends at 1:16

5 I chose this because it is about ddts

6 What is the bioaccumulation food chain
Bioaccumulation is when toxic chemicals build up in a food chain. The animals at the top of the food chain are severely affected. Small amounts of toxic substances are often used from human activity. These activities are taken up by plants. The plants are eaten by primary consumers. Primary consumers are herbivores feeding on plants. What is the bioaccumulation food chain

7 How does bioaccumulation affect the quality of sushi?

8 Article about bioaccumulation
Title: Toxic Effects and Bioaccumulation of Cadmium in the Aquatic Oligochaete Tubifex tubifex Author: M.-L. Bouché,F. Habets,S. Biagianti-Risbourg,G. Vernet Publication: Ecotoxicology and Environmental Safety Publisher: Elsevier Date: July 2000 Article about bioaccumulation Toxic Effects and Bioaccumulation of Cadmium in the Aquatic Oligochaete Tubifex tubifex

9 What is bioaccumulation
Bioaccumulation is the accumulation of substances, such as pesticides, or other chemicals in an organism. Bioaccumulation occurs when an organism absorbs a substance at a rate faster than that at which the substance is lost by catabolism and excretion. for example in fish, can be predicted by models. What is bioaccumulation

10 How can we reduce/prevent the occurrence of bioaccumulate
Here is some ways we can help prevent or reduce the occurrence of bioaccumulate : Do not put harmful substances into the water system or storm drains. Contact a recycling center for methods of safe disposal. Avoid toxic chemical pesticides. Eat certified organic foods when possible. Always wash fruits and vegetables before consuming. Avoid fishing or spending time in contaminated areas. Avoid plastics. Use cleaning products that are gentle on the environment. Choose fish wisely, as many contain unsafe levels of toxins.

12 Bioaccumulation is a toxic chemical
The amount of a substance such as a toxic chemical in many types of a living organism. Bioaccumulation takes place in a organism when the rate of a substance is greater than the rate of a transformation of a substance.

13 Specific examples of pollution that enter the food chain
If another animal eats another animal or organism and retains the pollutants which causes bioaccumulation. For example: a big fish Specific examples of pollution that enter the food chain

14 Toxins enter the food through many differents ways
Toxins enter the food through many differents ways. They can be ingested, absorbed through skin or inhaled, and plants take in toxins directly from soil. What are some species that have the most toxins built up in their tissues?

15 Discuss impacts related to overfishing
Well, first of all, what is overfishing? It's exactly what it sounds like, when fishermen catch to many fish. Fishermen have been catching more and more fish at a rate faster than they can reproduce and replenish the bodies of water with more fish Discuss impacts related to overfishing

16 Specific examples of overfishing in alberta/canada
The % of overfishing in Canada Here are some examples of overfishing in canada: collapse of the Atlantic Canadian cod fishery in the 1990s is one of the most common examples in the world of overfishing. There is a 5% of overfishing in Newfoundland and Alberta,Canada but in British Columbia,Canada there is a 19% of overfishing

17 Conservation efforts in canada related to overfishing/bioaccumulation
The impacts of overfishing and unsustainable fishing practices have damaged the health of our oceans and the long-term economic well-being of coastal communities. If our oceans and communities are to recover over the long term, we need a new approach: low impact fisheries for community prosperity, a way of fishing that will meet the needs of people and of wildlife.

18 Strategies that reduce problems associated with overfishing
If people want to we can reverse most of the destruction. In some situations it might only take a decade, in other situations it might take many centuries. Yet in the end we can have productive and healthy oceans again as is shown in many examples around the world. We do however need to act on it now, before we cross the point of no return.
