The Bacher Blog For parents of students in Room 16 Thurssday, October 17, 2013 Fundations: Unit 4 is a two week Unit. It focuses on words that have suffix endings: -s, -es, -ed, -ing, -er, - est. When I tap words with suffixes, I will never tap the suffix. To mark a suffix, we simply circle it. Normally, I give the Unit tests the last day of the 2nd week, but because I was out I want to make sure I get a good review in. The Unit 4 test will be given on Monday of next week. I will not collect the Unit 4 packet until that day, so your child has some words to practice at home. Next week we will start Unit 5, which will focus on multisyllabic words and additional suffix endings. Please make sure your child is completing his/her Fundations packet a little each night! Important Announcements: Be sure to look at the back of this paper for the Homework Log Scholastic Book Order forms will go home on Monday. Orders are due by the following Monday, October 28. Conference times were sent home two weeks ago. Thank you for your patience and understanding with my absence! Graded papers will be sent home next week. Recommended Website: internet_links1.htm Great links for 2nd grade skills in all subjects! The Daily 5/Work on Writing Last week, your child completed DOL Week 3 and took the DOL Quiz for that week on Monday. You'll notice the week 3 packet going home today (the sub never sent it home). We have started the DOL Week 4 packet and will finish it this week. We will also begin doing our first major writing project, in which we create a monster and write a descriptive piece about it. It's always a fun little project. Everyday Math Today we are taking our test for Chapter 2 in math. We spent yesterday doing a pretty good review of fact families, in/out boxes, and other skills from the test. Our next chapter will focus on Place Value, Money, and Time. You'll notice that we keep revisiting skills from previous chapters; however, each time we revisit, we also build on prior knowledge. Chapter 2 was the extent of teaching basic addition/subtraction facts. You'll notice that I've built in practice of fact triangles at home. PLEASE make sure your child is memorizing his/her +/- math facts!!! You'll quickly find us jumping into 2 and 3 digit addition in the coming weeks, but we'll be using the number grid for now to add...I will model for you at conferences. Homework: ***I included a lot for the rest of this week and next week on the back of this paper!!! Reading Log: “Spin, Spider, Spin!” – read every night ***October Book Report info going home on Thursday...due October 31 Math Log: Thurs - +/- fact triangles 10 min. Fri. - +/- fact triangles 10 min. Mon. – H.L.3-1 Tues. – +/- fact triangles Wed. – H.L Thurs. – H.L.3-3 Fri. - H.L. 3-4 Fundations packet: U4 packet due Monday, 10/21/13 ***U5 packet will be due on Friday, Nov. 1. The Daily 5/CAFÉ time/Reading: Last week, the students explored nonfiction books that focused on life cycles of various plants and animals. This week we will use some monster stories to get some ideas for descriptive writing about the monsters we create. We will also use Piggie Pie! By Margie Palatini to work on prediction and visualization strategies. My plan is to use Scholastic News next week to review nonfiction text features. Beginning next week, the entire 2nd grade will begin to experience IDEA time. This is a grade level-wide intervention time blocked off at the end of the day. Students will be working on a particular skill, based on their needs. We're going to ease into IDEA time with 3 days a week, but eventually hope to increase the number of days. You will hear more about IDEA time when we meet for conferences. Science/Social Studies: The students have continued to explore butterfly migration. They also compared the typical day of a Mexican student to themselves. Next week we will start exploring map skills. 1
