1 Changing Patterns of Life

2 Focus How are new ways of life replacing the old ways?
How has modernization affected the lives of women? What are the benefits and limits of modern science and technology? What forces have shaped a new global culture?

3 Old Ways and New Urbanization Developing world
Moving to cities to find jobs Half of the worlds population lives in urban area Major sports teams are located here Slums – constant threat of crime and drugs Urban children are becoming educated and rejecting their parents and their values – settling for material wealth Westernization “modernization without westernization” Welcome modern technology, but they still want their older tradition and religious practices. Reject western emphasis on material success and individual

4 Village life Still exists today Most villagers are farmers Workday starts at sunrise – women do house works- kids work in the fields Most technology is good, but some is bad because it weakens traditional culture Religious influences Fundamentalist – stress the fundamental, or basic, values of their faiths Many of them wanted political power at one point and now reject change claiming it undermines their beliefs Liberation theology – urged the church to take a more active role in opposing social conditions that contributed to poverty

5 New Rights and Roles for Women
Women won the right to vote in – European countries, Japan, China, Brazil, etc. Won elected offices UN says “they perform 2/3 of all working hours and receive only 1/10 of the world’s income, and own less than one percent of the world property.” IN THE WEST Feminist movement – want women to have more jobs, equal pay for equal work, and to end sexual harassment on the job Women are starting to get higher level jobs – some people blame this on the rising divorce rate While others say two incomes are necessary to raise a family

6 IN THE DEVELOPING WORLD
Women had equality – on paper at least Women in the middle class and upper class entered the work force Women still do the work at home Farm work and other household tasks In SE Asia women work to help pay for their brothers to go to school

7 Science and Technology
