CONTRASTING MONOLUGES UNIT
Advanced Performing Arts, 1st semester 2015
2
LEARNING TARGET AND GUIDING QUESTIONS FOR THIS UNIT
I can master common audition techniques in order to compete for parts that I want How can I effectively prepare to audition for a part that I desire? How does giving feedback to my peers make me a better performer?
3
HOW DO YOU CHOOSE MONOLOGUES FOR AN AUDITION?
Avoid performing a monologue from a really well-know play
4
YOU DON’T HAVE TO CHOOSE A MONOLOGUE FROM A PLAY!
You can choose from: Short Stories Poetry Novels Movies **Make sure to consider how you will incorporate movement into the text**
5
YOU HAVE TO CONSIDER THE PART YOU ARE AUDITIONING FOR
Read the play before an audition & choose a monologue that represents the character you are auditioning for If they ask for contrasting monologues, 1 should be for the part you are auditioning for, and perform that one first.
6
CHOOSE A MONOLOGUE THAT PLAYS TO YOUR NATURAL STRENGTHS
If you are NOT naturally funny, avoid comedic monologues if you can. If you have a hard time crying on stage, don’t choose one where you have to cry **But don’t limit yourself**
7
AVOID MONOLOGUES WITH ACCENTS
If you choose a monologue with a dialect, make sure that your contrasting monologue does not have one. If you only get 1 monologue, be yourself and speak the way you naturally speak.
8
AVOID CUSSING, SEXUAL LANGUAGE, OR ABUSIVE LANGUAGE
You never know how the casting director feels about this, and you will blow your chances if you make assumptions
9
CHOOSE A MONOLOGUE IN YOUR AGE RANGE & cultural background
Especially from someone who is older playing someone who is younger.
10
GREAT MONOLOGUES INCLUDE:
Being entertaining Fits you Showcases your acting abilities Has a storyline Is about 1 minute long Has some surprises in it No offensive language Does not portray someone who is recognizable (like movie stars)
