Word Order – Unit 98 (A) Adjective Order in a noun phrase: Opinion adjectives come first. Opinion: pretty, funny, useful, wonderful, hard, easy, fun, great, etc. Fact: blue, large, 50-year old, fat, thin, sick, Thai, plastic, young, paper, etc.

Word Order – Unit 98 (B) Usual Adjective Order in a noun phrase: (determiner—e.g.— a, the, several, some, this, etc.) → opinion → size → age → color → place → material The incredible big old yellow German metal can.

Word Order – Unit 98 Adjective Order in a noun phrase: Also, (C) the last hour, the third time, etc. (D) Use adjectives, not adverbs, after stative (non-active) verbs like be, seems, looks, appears, feels, etc.

Word Order – Unit 108 (A) Verbs and Direct Objects usually go together: E.g., eat pizza, grew 10 centimeters, see the cat (B) • Verb and Place go together: study in the library • Time goes after place: study in the library on Monday • Time can often be used at the beginning: On Monday, I often study in the library • Time words not used at the beginning: always, never, often

Word Order – Unit 109 (A) See last part of U108 (B) (NOTE: The rules for adverbs can vary due to emphasis.) • Adverbs usually go before one-word verbs and have to • Adverbs go after stative (non-action) verbs. • Adverbs split (go after the first helping verb) of multi-word verbs – e.g. “have always wondered” • “probably” goes before the negative (see example) (C) All and both– see examples (D) Shorten sentences by not repeating understood verbs (adverb position changes)
