Here’s Today’s Plan: We will read 100 pages in one class!!!
I’ll model the first few pages Later, we’ll discuss Then we’ll reflect Image: Online handout (links to different resources). See Why Read.doc Create handout for note-taking Create handout for collaboration (simultaneous round robin?) During the debate, follow a formal debate for the first round and then do a horseshoe debate where students pick what they actually believe. Most people understand that reading is a good idea. Many teachers take the fact we can read (and read well) for granted. Many students, however, could benefit from knowing a bunch of reasons WHY it’s a skill worth improving. Many students mistakenly assume that their current reading skills are set in stone. Maybe add to Why Read word doc: Have them read an article on fiction representing non-fiction or an article about how fiction can tell stories about things too terrible to talk about in real life (did Beatrice and Virgil have a segment on that?)

Now We’re Going to Read! While reading: Jot Down key ideas
Jot questions, comments and connections in your journal (at least one per page – include page numbers!!!)
3
Page Numbers: Remember to jot down images, questions and connections in your journal! At least fifteen! Everyone: Read 1-18 Group 1: Group 2: 37-52 Group 3: 53-67 Group 4: 68-84 Group 5: Reading the first pages out loud to model the process. Then, let them read a few out loud to each other. Finally, let them all settle in to silent reading. Everyone does the first 1-18 and then they split off to their sections.
