Colleen’S experiences
Motivation for selecting the Netherlands: Highly ranked education system Desire to learn “what’s working” and bring it back to US Reputation as a tolerant, progressive society Accessible to rest of Europe and US First impressions / first week at the school: Yikes! Not knowing Dutch is more ovewhelming than I thought it would be … what’s going on?? The school system is very different than the US’s … what’s going on??

Colleen’S experiences
Work: Co-teaching is fun and teaches me a lot about instruction in Holland Small group instruction gives more individualized student attention and practice Meetings to create schedule for each period and set up focus skills for each class (reading, writing, speaking, etc) Interaction with the students / language barriers Most students started out very nervous to speak English, but are opening up Top performing students help me translate to lower performers Kids are kids … most students (although they are a bit older) behave the same as US students, which makes things easier (I know what will be fun, where there will be challenges, how to respond)
